Improve Our Quality of Life

Sustainability Culture

Building a strong sustainability culture is foundational to achieving all environmental goals, as lasting change requires community-wide behavior shifts. Education and peer-to-peer learning transform residents, businesses, and city staff from passive observers into active climate action participants. This cultural foundation ensures long-term success and community ownership of sustainability initiatives.

Sustainability Culture Goal (SC): Fostering community-wide environmental awareness, education programs, and collaborative initiatives that engage residents in sustainable practices and climate action.

Key Achievements

  • Alhambra recently secured $25 million in State funding to build a new community center at Shorb Place. This space will be the city’s first dedicated community resilience center and expand opportunities for sustainability programming and public engagement.
  • The Alhambra Library offers gardening education workshops that connect residents with sustainable growing practices, native plant cultivation, and environmental stewardship skills.
  • The City hosts regular community plant swap events where residents exchange plants, seeds, and knowledge while promoting native and drought-tolerant species throughout neighborhoods.
  • Alhambra’s Annual Eco Fair brings together environmental organizations, sustainable businesses, and residents alongside the Sunday Farmers Market to showcase sustainability innovations and inspire environmentally conscious practices.
  • The City’s Environmental Sustainability Commission actively engages in air quality awareness and community education.

Community Spotlight: Annual Eco Fair — Celebrating Sustainability

Each spring, Alhambra’s Annual Eco Fair transforms downtown into a vibrant celebration of environmental stewardship. Held alongside the Sunday Farmers Market on Main Street, this beloved event brings together eco-friendly vendors, interactive games, raffles, and educational exhibits showcasing local sustainability efforts. Organized by the Environmental Sustainability Commission, the fair serves as both a showcase for green businesses and an accessible entry point for residents to learn about renewable energy, water conservation, waste reduction, and sustainable transportation. More than just an event, the Eco Fair represents Alhambra’s grassroots approach to environmental action, where neighbors connect over shared values and families discover sustainable living practices together.
